Provide a Meal

At the Dignity Center, we break bread and break barriers. Daily, we are in need of breakfast foods, healthy lunches and snacks, beverages, and friends to enjoy it all with!

Are you ready to put on some gloves and go to work at Wear Gloves?

A letter from Bert and Diane Yancey

We need assistance in feeding the clients lunch on three weekdays; Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.

My wife Diane and I have been serving at Wear Gloves for approximately five years. We believe in the saying attributed to Francis of Assisi, “Preach the Gospel. If necessary, use words.”

We feel that providing a meal is a service in the Kingdom for the children of God, especially these clients who are distressed and are using the Wear Gloves program to provide what they need.

We have witnessed the growth of the Dignity Center (DC) through the years, especially in the number of clients whom we serve meals.

Currently we serve approximately 40 clients lunch meals on Thursday and Friday.

We provide the cutlery, napkins, plates, and food. We do not serve drinks. There are water fountains on site and most clients bring their own water containers.

We have a six-meal rotation and we use one each week. We prepare the meal the night before while doing our Wear Gloves “dance” in the kitchen. It’s not an actual dance, its more like moving around each other in our small kitchen. But we do the dance, with our five (sometimes six) crock pots as we prepare a meal.

The meals are full of protein and vegetables. Usually Diane does the “main course” and I prepare the sides. (At the bottom of this e-mail I have provided our meal schedule). Our meals also include a banana for each serving.

We coordinate the delivery of the meals to the Dignity Center by 11:30 a.m. We check with the DC Manager Carlos to find an area to set up. We place the items on the table buffet style. The clients serve themselves as we engage in conversation with them.

We provide paper plates for those who want to eat on site and a biodegradable take home container for those who prefer to take food home. Leftovers are offered to the clients and taken home by the clients to feed friends and family.

The clients complete their work between 1130-1200. Some eat on site, most take food home in a take-home container that we provide.

The afternoon warehouse crew and litter crew come in between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m.

We clean up, pack up our items to be washed, and are usually leaving the site by 12:50 p.m.

We currently are feeding the clients at a cost ranging from $3.00 to $5.00 per person, per meal, depending on the meal.

On Fridays we have been preparing a protein-based salad.

If you’re interested in providing a meal each week, let us know. We can all share ideas that will make our meal preparation and delivery easier.

“Many hands make light work” – John Heywood

Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit will guide you in your decision. May your choices be guided by The Spirit so that your abilities can best be used in the Kingdom.
