Meet Alonzo
Alonzo was introduced to Wear Gloves by a friend. After being released from serving 7 years in prison, Alonzo found it difficult to secure employment. He was directed to Wear Gloves and scheduled an interview to meet with Melissa. He was able to obtain work through Wear Gloves pretty much immediately. Alonzo started on the Litter Crew, cleaning up the local parks. Quickly, he moved to the drain crew and, after a couple of short months, was promoted to Navigator. Alonzo now reads all the city maps and directs the litter and drain crews accordingly. “It’s a really great job, I enjoy it.”, Alonzo said with pride.
Wear Gloves enabled him to gain stability at a crucial time. Since coming to Wear Gloves at the
beginning of this year, Alonzo has accomplished some really big goals. He has put in the work and been dedicated to rebuilding with the support and encouragement here at Wear Gloves. Alonzo was able to get his license and a car for reliable transportation. With a humble heart and a great sense of accomplishment, he proceeded with, “Recently, I was able to buy a house; so now I am a proud homeowner.” It was evident in my time with Alonzo that he has clear goals and a sincere drive to keep moving towards meaning and purpose. He’ll keep setting goals and no doubt accomplishing all the things he sets his mind to do. He has been able to find a second job and has just been focused on continuing his journey forward.
His next goals are to start studying for his CDL. Even as he plans for the future, setting new goals, Alonzo said, “I plan to stay in the area and hope to stay with Wear Gloves because of the loyalty and love they have shown me.” From Ken getting him a bicycle when he was first starting to Carlos helping him with the housing process, Alonzo shared a great sense of gratitude for how the campus and the people at Wear Gloves have supported him through these past months of rebuilding a life defined by purpose. Alonzo is a testament to the power of second chances and new beginnings. It’s almost magical what happens when we put on some gloves and dive into purpose. Stability, hope, and a little grace for the journey can lead to amazing results, just ask Alonzo.
